Thank you, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco

Standard

A blast from the past-this book is one of the most BEAUTIFUL stories I ever remember reading as a child!

This true story of Patricia Polacco’s struggle to learn to read is a tribute to the teacher that brought words to life for her, Mr. Falker.  Reading was incredibly difficult for Trisha as she saw the words “differently” than the other students but “knowledge is like the bee that made that sweet honey, you have to chase it through the pages of a book!”  Trisha certainly has to chase knowledge through a series of losing her grandparents, moving to a new state, and being bullied  by a boy named Eric.  However, with the help of patient teachers, Trisha realizes that she has the power to achieve her goals!

The story is wonderfully illustrated in pencil and watercolor by Polacco and the book even foreshadows her career as an artist.  The entire tribute is enough to bring tears of joy to one’s eyes especially when Polacco thanks her wonderful Mr. Falker at the end of the book.  This book reminds us all of the power of a great teacher and the indispensability of knowledge.
