The beautiful illustrations draw attention to the detail in the furrow of Bear’s brow and the kindness in the animals’ eyes. The pencil sketches and watercolor washes highlight each season’s colors, with autumn’s reds in stark contrast with a white background, winter’s light blue snowiness covering the landscape, and spring’s green awakening coming to life across the pages.

Bear Has a Story to Tell highlights the reciprocal nature of friendship, and a willingness to wait and put others before oneself. Bear puts his desire to tell his story on the back burner in order to help all of his friends. His friends help him remember his story. He emphasizes collaboration, with different characters each bringing something to the table.

This book would be an excellent way to show young children not only the different ways animals prepare for the winter, but also the core aspects of storytelling.
